HIGH ROYDS HOSPITAL CENTENARY 1888 - 1988
This collection shows images and text from the Commemorative Brochure compiled by Dr Roy Hullin, to
celebrate the Centenary of High Royds Hospital 1888-1988. It is a valuable resource and the foreword is reproduced here:-
FOREWORD
When it was decided to commemorate the centenary of High Royds Hospital it was thought appropriate to provide
a brief history of the 100 years. I agreed to undertake this task but did so with some trepidation in the face of many other
commitments. I felt, however, that I wished to repay the hospital in some small way since it had provided a Metabolic Research
Unit since 1962 and research facilities of some kind since 1952.
I have developed over 36 years what I can only describe as an admiration, even an affection for the hospital
and the staff who have worked there during that time.
I have found the compilation of this story most satisfying. Necessarily, I have had to be very selective
in order to keep the chronicle to a reasonable size. I have promised myself, however, that when I retire I will seek to compile
a more comprehensive history which I hope will reflect the changing face of psychiatry and the hospital over the century.
I would like to thank all those many people who have provided me with documents, which have made this account
possible. The opinions and selections are my own and any blame, or even praise, should be directed to me personally.
Dr Roy Hullin.
